Cutting out floors
Erik's Mustang Restoration Site II

Step 2 need a place to start.

The idea of cutting out the floor seemed exciting, but I stopped and thought about it for a few and realized that there was a structural problem here. The front frame of the car runs under the floor and is then spotwelded to the floor that I want to cut out. Here is the question I kept asking myself...How do I know that when I cut the floor out, the car is not going to fall on the floor due to lack of support from the frame? My conclusion was that it would not be a problem, but I am still concerned with the possibility of the unibody twisting when I cut the floors out causing an alignment problem when I get the whole thing together. So here is what I did. I verified that I was supporting the car relatively evenly on 4 points, and then cut the area surrounding the frame support. I watched while cutting very closely to verify that there was no major movement between the two pieces...lucked out...no relative movement. Now it's time to get down to real cutting...

Note here that I left material every so often in the event I had a problem, I figured if I did something wrong, I could always go back and weld it up and pay to have this part done...
